After lightning and thunderstorms caused last week’s race to be cancelled, the Goulburn Aquatic Centre and Triathlon club resumed racing last night with round 5 of the Goulburn Power Centre Aquathon series.
Whilst race fitness is not so much of an issue for the younger folk, improvements are just beginning to show for many of the older contingent in the various race divisions. In fact two of the over 70’s competitors Peter Tapp and Neil Kennedy both recorded season best times on Tuesday. Some of the other “over 40” competitors to also show improvement were Jane Twohill, Carole Rose, Lori McWhirter and Mark Stutchbury.
It was a case of déjà vu in the placegetters in the distance divisions Charlie Moss and Ava McIntyre both continue to dominate the novice race, Charlie only missing a sub 12 minute result by 1 second.
Alex Skeffington put in a scorching sub 18 minute run and Ava McIntyre a fast 200m swim on their way to victory in the Open 1 race (200m/4km). Not to be outdone by his little brother, Tom Skeffington overcame a one minute swim-time deficit to take victory over Mick Beard in the Open 2 race (400m/4) , Tom’s 4km run time time of 15:51 enough to give him a 40 second buffer at the finish. In the women’s Open 2 race , Nadine Moroney returned to the winner’s circle turning the tables on Jess Kennedy and Danielle Connell.
The Long distance race was dominated once again by Kurt Warn but it was Olivia Stutchbury who surprised the field scoring the second fastest time over all and a Career best of 37:04. Her result bolstered by a very impressive swim of 9:45 for the 600m swim.
Racing continues at the aquatic Centre every Tuesday night at 6:00pm with the club only pausing for a two week hiatus over the Xmas period. Membership can be purchase at any time from the Pool entry office.
